Sometimes a quick sketch is all that is needed to capture the spirit of a place. This drawing records a moment in the woodland near my village, where the layered tree canopy, filtered light and natural structure of the landscape create a distinctive atmosphere.

Sketching is an important part of the landscape architect’s way of seeing. It helps translate observation into understanding — revealing patterns of form, space and character that influence how landscapes are interpreted and ultimately designed.
