The IDA-UK promotes strategies to ensure light pollution is managed responsibly, so that we can enjoy dark skies, star-filled skies & so that nocturnal creatures can continue to thrive without the detrimental effect of bright night light.
Artificial lights have a number of detrimental effects insofar as:
- Affecting human health and wellbeing.
- Energy wastage.
- Unnecessary financial outputs.
Research into Dark Skies versus light polluted environments suggests that artificial lighting disrupts the natural behaviors of animals. It affects a range of behaviours and patterns including migration, breeding, feeding, and predator-prey relationships.
This interactive map identifies places that truly offer dark skies in line with the Dark Skies Inititative criteria. This map also helps create awareness about how light pollution spills up into the night sky in the countryside.
There are 4 strategies to improve the situation:
1. Celebrate The Night: Be aware of the benefits of the night.
2. Dark Sky Protection: Protect exemplary dark skies, and urban night skies.
3. Lighting: Engage communities to reduce light pollution.
4. Night Sky Restoration: Slow, halt, and reverse light pollution.
Here is the interactive map for the Dark Skies Initiative.
