What are Townscapes and Seascapes?

Townscape

- The context is where a dominant built environment exists.

- It is concerned with buildings and the relationships between them.

- It includes the network of Green Infrastructure, public places and open spaces.

- Historic dimensions contribute to the context of townscapes.

Townscape is concerned with change and development over time, contributing to the form and character of a place.

Seascape

- A seascape is a landscape with views of seas and coastlines.

- It includes riverine and marine environments.

- It considers cultural, historical and archaeological interdependencies.

Seascape has been included in Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA) work, in accordance with the European Landscape Convention due to an increase in:

- Aquaculture.

- Offshore wind farms.

- Tidal energy schemes.

- Coastal risk management defences.
