HEATHLAND STUDIO
JOURNAL
The Heathland Studio Journal explores the evolving relationship between landscape, ecology, planning and the built environment through the lens of landscape architecture. The journal reflects on the processes, principles and environmental considerations that shape places — from strategic masterplanning and Biodiversity Net Gain to settlement character, water-sensitive design, public realm and the everyday experience of landscape.
Drawing from professional practice, site observation and ongoing research, the journal examines how landscapes are understood, planned and transformed over time. Articles consider the interaction between natural systems, cultural narratives, infrastructure and development, while also reflecting on the quieter sensory and experiential qualities that give places identity and meaning.
The journal serves as a space for thoughtful exploration of contemporary landscape issues affecting East Anglia and the wider UK, including environmental policy, sustainable development, ecological resilience and landscape-led design approaches. It also shares insights into professional process, visual analysis and the role of landscape architecture in creating functional, enduring and environmentally responsive places.
Through essays, sketches, commentary and project reflections, the journal aims to contribute to wider conversations around landscape, planning and environmental stewardship while communicating the value of careful, context-led design thinking.
