OUR PHILOSPHY & ETHOS

Circle logo

NATURE IN DESIGN

Nature in Design defines our philosophical approach, recognising our deep connection to the earth and the interdependence of all life within its natural systems. This principle underpins every decision we make.

We work in an evidence-based, environmentally responsible way, ensuring that each intervention responds to ecological processes, landscape character and long-term resilience.

Rather than imposing solutions, we seek to understand and work with natural systems — shaping landscapes that support biodiversity, function sustainably and endure over time.

CONTEXT & UNDERSTANDING

We believe every landscape sits within a wider setting — ecological, cultural & visual — which must be understood before any design response is formed.

We prioritise understanding context before proposing change, ensuring that design decisions are grounded, appropriate and responsive to place.

This reinforces rural credibility, planning credibility & conservation alignment, supporting outcomes that are both considered & robustly justified.

Historic and heritage buildings require landscapes responses that align with the built fabric and integrate a site into its natural landscape and local context or setting

EARLY

INTERVENTION THINKING

The most important landscape decisions are often made at the earliest stages of a project. We aim to contribute early, helping shape proposals before constraints become costly problems.

Our work integrates planning expertise, design creativity, scientific insight & ecological understanding.

Through bespoke project management & carefully tailored solutions, we respond to the specific qualities of each site, reflect our clients’ aspirations & respect the landscapes in which our work sits.

CREATIVITY ROOTED
IN STEWARDSHIP

We believe creativity should emerge from understanding — not from trends.

Our design approach balances imagination with responsibility, ensuring that every intervention is grounded in context, ecology and long-term management.

We shape landscapes that are both expressive and enduring, where aesthetic clarity supports environmental integrity and future resilience.

In this way, creativity becomes an act of stewardship — enhancing place while respecting its character and capacity to evolve.

Rural projects and sites often require more sensitive approaches that embrace the local character and architectural vernacular, ensuring that site proposals align with environmental imperatives and that the site responds adequately to its context

PROPORTIONATE
DESIGN

Proportionate design is fundamental to creating landscapes that feel coherent, comfortable & visually balanced.

In landscape architecture, proportion refers to the relationship between elements:  space, structure, planting & people, recognising that these relationships are organised to form a harmonious whole.

This approach ensures that no element feels out of scale with its surroundings. Spaces correspond appropriately to their intended use & built features are positioned comfortably within the wider landscape context, creating a landscape that feels intuitive, legible & well-composed.

The first step in proportionate design is understanding the site context and the environment within which the site is embedded. Thereafter, responding to the context is carried out through the processes of masterplanning, design development, planning application procsses and technial detailing.

DELIVERY
DISCIPLINE

Design quality must be matched by delivery discipline.

Our work is informed by formal project management training, ensuring proposals are realistic, coordinated & capable of being delivered successfully. Delivery discipline ensures consistent reliable outcomes.

Our approach ensures structured planning, coordination & precise execution, keeping work controlled & aligned with intent.

We follow consistent processes that improve quality, reliability & predictable project outcomes.

COLLABORATION
& INTEGRITY

We believe collaboration and integrity underpin every stage of our work, shaping how we engage, design and deliver across disciplines.

We work comfortably within multi-disciplinary teams, integrating landscape with engineering, drainage, access & environmental requirements from the outset.

As a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute, the practice operates in accordance with its Code of Conduct, ensuring independence, ethical practice and professional accountability.

We collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, colleagues, clients and intenal and external project stakeholders to ensure that the project meets its intended objectives, is delivered to fulfill the clients requirements and that is integrates well with its historic, environmental, social and built fabric

LONGEVITY
&
LIFECYCLE THINKING

We believe longevity and lifecycle thinking are essential to creating landscapes that endure beyond construction.

We consider not only how a landscape is constructed, but how it will be managed, maintained and funded over its lifespan.

This approach ensures resilience, adaptability and long-term value, supporting places that can evolve while remaining functional and coherent over time.

In this way, longevity becomes a guiding discipline that links design intent with practical stewardship.

We work on projects to ensure that the hard and soft landscape elements integrat well with their setting and context and ar ronust to meet the long term requirements set out by the client and proejct stakeholders. Materials are selected based on locl context, carbon footprint, environmental impact and appropriateness for use. Additionally, project designs need to ensure that long term management and maintenance aspects are addressed to ensure that long term benefits are reaped

REGIONAL
COMMITMENT

We believe strong regional commitment is fundamental to meaningful landscape practice.

Based in Suffolk and working across East Anglia, we are committed to supporting landscapes at parish, district and county scale.

Our practice is grounded in an understanding of rural character, settlement pattern and the distinctive qualities of the region.

In this way, regional commitment ensures our work remains rooted in place, responding to local context, identity and landscape character.

We work on local projects in East Anglia, namely Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex and North London. We have insight into the local context of East Anglia and the local chracter and distinctiveness it offers in the built environment as well as the natural and environmental context of the area. This enables us to put forward proposals that are contextually appropriate and respond to national and local guidance such as the NPPF, the LNRS, Local Design Guides and design standards
